Can AI connect and act across the software we already use?
Short answer
Often, and this is where a lot of early value hides. Most companies do not have an information shortage. They have an assembly problem, with employees manually moving between disconnected systems to build a picture. Connecting what you already own frequently beats buying anything new.
One part of the truth lives in the customer system. Another is in an operational platform. Another is in spreadsheets. The employees become the integration layer, and that work is invisible on every report because it looks like their job.
Our clearest example involved a distribution executive losing more than half of every working day to route planning. Sensitive loads, verification windows, and late fees that triggered the moment a stop slipped past its window. No new software solved it and no additional hire solved it. What solved it was connecting three systems the company already owned, delivering live progress through the day and flagging any at-risk stop with enough lead time to reroute. The hours came back, and more importantly the constant low-level worry stopped.
There is a caution that belongs alongside this. Connecting systems should reduce complexity rather than create an invisible web of dependencies nobody can explain. One technology leader warned about sliding back into a world where employees jump between siloed tools to finish a single task, which is the problem this was supposed to solve.
So connect what the specific workflow requires, not everything that is technically reachable. Permissions, data ownership, security, and reliability all still apply, and an agent should not get unrestricted access just because integration was possible.
Done well, this makes technology you already pay for considerably more useful, which is a better first move than another platform.
